Inlet photography workshop popular
Sana Kamal has a good eye for a photo.
Holding her camera in one hand and a dandelion in the other, the Camborne 13-year-old was putting into practice what she’d just been learning at a photography workshop organised by Guardians of Pauatahanui Inlet.
Sana said she was keen to attend the workshop to learn about taking unusual shots.
She said she had been interested in photography for a long time and used social media to share her photos.
‘‘When I started getting my first social media accounts I decided to post some of my photos, since I didn’t know what else to post,’’ she said.
‘‘But otherwise photography is mainly a hobby for me and it’s just my way to express life.’’
Sana was one of the lucky ones, said Beverly Fairfax, who co-ordinated the workshop.
‘‘This is the second year we’ve run the workshop, and registrations flooded in,’’ Fairfax said. ‘‘ We had to stop when we got to 20.
‘‘ We’re really lucky that Destina Munro, the president of Kapiti Camera Club and a photojournalism tutor at Whitireia, is happy to share her skills with these kids.’’
Also taking part in the workshop were brother and sister Leo and Phoebe Shing, who submitted successful prints last year.
Jared Le Roy, another successful competitor from last year, brought along younger brother Pierre. Their father, Paul, is also a keen photographer.
‘‘ We
love
it when
our competition becomes a family affair,’’ Fairfax said. ‘‘We’ve got lots of families where parents and children enter the competition, and we suspect there’s a bit of family rivalry in some households.’’
There’ll be no such competitiveness in Sana’s family.
Asked if her family also liked photography, she laughed.
‘‘They do, but they take selfies. I’m the only one who takes it seriously.’’
Guardians of Pauatahanui Inlet is looking forward to a bumper crop of entries for its annual photo competition, and has been reaching out to schools, retirement villages and camera clubs, as well as the public.
‘‘ We want everyone who enjoys the inlet to have a go,’’ Fairfax said.
The Guardians photo competition closes on April 15. Go to gopi. org. nz/ photo- competition for details and entry forms.
