Should Porirua have a town clock? Surprisingly, as you’ll read in this week’s Flashback on page 16, it is an issue that has previously split the community.

When we floated the suggestion on our Facebook page last week, the feedback was varied.

Some felt the city council had better things to do with its money, and others wondered where a clock would go.

However, some people thought a clock would be a point of pride for Porirua.

There’s no doubt big clocks are a feature of the main streets of many New Zealand cities. Some are a real landmark.

The idea of a Porirua clock was raised in the 1990s and again a few years ago. There was even a person lined up to pay for it – it is estimated a clock would cost about $16,000. But still the idea failed to gain traction.
