Sigmund’s new football role
Supporting junior football players on and off the field, is key to keeping them engaged in the game says former All Whites and Wellington Phoenix centre back Ben Sigmund.
He has just been appointed as the football development manager at North Wellington AFC.
Initially an advisory role with the senior football club, Sigmund aims to work as much as possible with junior players to provide a blend of football and personal development opportunities.
‘‘I guess for me it is about lifting the standards,’’ Sigmund said.

coaches and a really good vision, but it is really helping implement the vision.
‘‘One thing I missed out on as a professional was having the help and guidance off the field.’’
He believes clubs can stop juniors from dropping football when they leave school by providing life skills, from financial literacy and goal setting to improving resilience and communication.
He says tackling junior players individual needs will help them reach their full potential.
‘‘[We] want to keep these kids playing football and offer them a good future, not necessarily [just] a good player, but a real person.
‘‘I truly believe it is about giving people a bit of service and love.’’
Sigmund was part of the New Zealand All Whites team from 2000 until 2014 and a Wellington Phoenix player until 2015.
He currently plays for Cashmere Technical, but North Wellington is hoping he will progress to on-field involvement with North Wellington’s Premier team in 2017.
North Wellington AFC is part of a football partnership involving Onslow and North Wellington junior football clubs, and Newlands and Onslow colleges.
The Northern Hills Pathway aims to provide a smooth transition from first kicks through to masters football.
‘‘We see the chance to work with Ben and provide some value added opportunities for young people as a real positive for everyone involved,’’ club chairman David Rayner said.
‘‘We have a part to play as the destination club for children and youth in the area and having Ben available is a partnership that we value.’’
