I used to travel a lot overseas. Even with kids we would save all year to head off to an exotic island or across the ditch to Australia.

The most adventurou­s trip we undertook was a road trip up the Pacific Highway on the west coast of the United States and then into Canada and across to Calgary. It was an exciting time, especially with two young teenagers in the back seat. I had a fabulous junket to Beijing just before the Olympic Games but since then it has been very quiet on the travel front.

As US President Donald Trump bombs Syria and ramps up his rhetoric on North Korea, I’m very happy to be in this part of the world.

Over the last decade or so there has been an expectatio­n that our children will head off on an OE - to see and experience life in other countries. My daughters don’t seem that interested.

The world has always had volatile hot spots, but at the moment I’m happy that they are content to stay down under - at least for a while anyway. - Sharron Pardoe, News Director Communitie­s
