Sharing nude photos a betrayal of trust, man told

A Wellington man has been sentenced for sharing nude photos online of three different women without their knowledge.

The 23-year-old from Hataitai was sentenced in Porirua District Court on Thursday after admitting three charges of harming the women by sharing nude photos, some of which were exchanged on Snapchat, on public websites, or other social media.

One charge involved a woman being told by a witness that photos of her had appeared on a Russian public website earlier this year.

Judge Jan Kelly said the victim checked the site, and found images of herself engaged in sex acts.

The woman also noticed photos on the site of another woman she knew. The second woman checked the site, and recognised herself.

The judge said victim impact statements ‘‘spoke about the significant harm your offending has caused them’’.

‘‘They talk about extreme emotional distress ... lost confidence. A diminished sense of self.

‘‘They talk about your betrayal and breach of trust.’’

The third victim was in a relationship with the man in 2015, and sent him naked photos on Snapchat.

She ended the relationship in 2016, but later got a message from someone saying he had seen photos of her online.

At least 15 nude photos of her had been put on Facebook.

The woman then started to receive Snapchats from a strange name, which showed a man in a sex act. She could not see his face, but recognised the body as that of her former partner.

A clinical psychologist’s report recommended treatment to address his ‘‘problematic behav- iour’’.

The man had previous convictions from 2014 that included publishing intimate recordings, and accessing a computer without authority.

The judge convicted him on each charge, and ordered him to undergo intensive supervision for 18 months, which included completing appropriate counselling.

She also ordered him to do 150 hours of community work.
