- STAFF REPORTER

‘‘These kids pound the beach, swim the bay, paddle their boards and sprint for flags.’’

Who are, who are, who are we? We are the kids from Ti-ta-hi.

Kids from the Titahi Bay Surf Life Saving Club, aged 8 to 14, beat the best from the Central Region at Waimarama Beach in Hawke’s Bay over Wellington Anniversary weekend.

Titahi Bay Surf Life Saving Club coach Lizzy Bunckenburg said that from 8.30am to 6pm ‘‘these kids fought tough competition to test their abilities and endurance’’.

‘‘They won an impressive haul of medals and ribbons, making them the top club for that competition finishing on 111 points with Maranui a close 98 and Waimarama taking third spot on 85.

‘‘The team morale is what drives the kids to want to do well for themselves and their club. Most importantly they support each other and those from other clubs whom they’ve formed a bond with.

‘‘Who are, who are, who are we? We are the kids from Ti-ta-hi is the chant which rang loudly around Waimarama.’’

They have been training for the National Under-14 Surf Life Saving competition, which will be held over four days later this year at Orewa Beach north of Auckland.

‘‘These kids pound the beach, swim the bay, paddle their boards and sprint for flags.

‘‘Throw in a few team events and that is the sport of Surf Life Saving for under-14s. These are your future life guards that will go on to patrol our beaches keeping swimmers safe.’’

A fundraising quiz night will be held at the Supply Room in Mana on February 11.
