Call for a resource centre for Ka¯ piti

- David Haxton

Jodie Molloy, a passionate early childhood teacher, wants to create a resource centre in

Ka¯ piti where people can buy reusable items.

She has relocated to Ka¯ piti from Auckland where there are two resource centres.

“These centres are a place where local businesses can donate usable materials and resources they are going to be recycling or throwing away.

“They are then sold on cheaply to early childhood centres, schools and community groups to be repurposed, allowing our children the rich opportunity to explore open ended materials and resources in their play.

“The centres are non-profit organisations giving back to the local community and removing waste from our tips.

“I really want to set up the first resource centre here in Ka¯ piti.”

Reusable items include cardboard tubes, nuts and bolts, fabrics, carpet, containers, paper, cardboard, the list goes on.

“It’s about getting items away from the rubbish tip and giving it a second life.

“I’m quite passionate about recycling and also open-ended resources for children.”

She said a resource centre, like the two in Auckland, were “a field day for a teacher”. “There’s so much stuff. “It’s also everyone coming together to look after our planet and encouraging better learning experiences for our children.”

Jodie, from Otaki ¯ Beach, is searching for the right building to set up the venture.
