Volunteers thanked

-

The Ka¯ piti Red Cross branch honoured their long standing volunteers for their service to the community this month with Ka¯ piti mayor K Gurunathan guest speaker.

With 55 Red Cross members in attendance, the mayor presented several awards to members who have given more than 10 years of service.

The main activity for the

Red Cross Branch in this area is delivering Meal on Wheels.

Over the last year almost 15,000 meals were delivered in a region that extends from Waikanae to Paeka¯ ka¯ riki.

The Red Cross in Ka¯ piti also offers first aid classes, and there is a disaster/ welfare team on standby ready to assist should there be a natural disaster in this region.

Funds raised are used to support refugee families when they arrive in New Zealand, and for victims of war and disaster both in New Zealand and overseas.

Ka¯ piti Red Cross branch president Wendy Smith described how in the decade ahead climate change will bring about rapid and irreversible movement of millions of people worldwide in addition to those whose homes and families have been destroyed by war.

The mayor and his wife joined in the celebrations and congratulated the Red Cross members on their sterling efforts, emphasising how valuable this is to the economy.

Anyone who would like to join the Red Cross branch and take part in its voluntary activities can contact Wendy Smith on 905 6048 or Marty Barrett on 021 08195370.
