Concerts a chance for students to shine

Performers impress at Music Society event

-

Waikanae Music Society recently hosted their students’ concerts in the Waikanae Memorial Hall. Talented piano students and violin students, of varying ages and taught by local music teachers, provided a very high standard of performance.

The youngest, Jingwei Xu, 7, taught by Heidi Schrama, played Sonatina Op 36 No.1 by Clementi from memory.

The piano works performed included classical items by Tchaikovsky and Haydn, along with other works by Kuhlau, Gillock and Wedgewood.

Alice Anderson, pupil of Wendy van Delden, competently dealt with Rachmaninoff’s Polichenelle Op 3 No 4, part of which has the sound of rippling waters in the right hand and a lovely melody in the left.

A welcome addition to the programme were items performed by several violin students, all pupils of Ann White, with a variety of pieces from Vivaldi, Francour, Seitz, and Rameau. Each performer was accompanied by Ellen Barrett.

These pupils then combined as the

Paraparaumu College Violin Quartet of Estelle Thackery, Jerry Li, Adam O’Connell and Rusian Vorbey, completing the afternoon with Concerto for four violins by Telemann.

Vice president of Waikanae Music, Carol Dyer, said while the students have an opportunity to gain experience in performing on stage, on the society’s incomparable Fazioli grand piano, it is recognised that teachers and parents are a huge encouragement.

“Some players may go on to greater heights in the musical field and possibly come back to perform for Waikanae Music Society.”

The next Waikanae Music Society concert will be on June 11, with pianist Michael Houstoun performing.
