Award goes to Nga Uruora
Kapiti eco-restoration group Nga Uruora Kapiti Project has won an award for its work to restore native forest in the district.
Nga Uruora won the heritage and environment category at the recent Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards.
The group, which won the supreme award at the earlier Kapiti awards, includes 20 volunteers who plant trees, develop tracks and carry out pest and weed control programmes. With a vision to bring Kapiti Island’s bird song back to the coast by creating a continuous ribbon of birdsafe native forest from Porirua to Waikanae, the group’s current focus is on the escarpment between Paekakariki and Pukerua Bay.
Nga Uruora secretary Paul Callister said the award was great positive reinforcement for the work volunteers did.
He said the group appreciated the support of the Kapiti Coast District Council, which lent a staff member half a day each week tohelp.
