Public to be consulted on Levin Town Centre

- ADAM POULOPOULOS

Public consultation on plans to upgrade Levin’s town centre has begun, with a new public space in the town centre among the ideas suggested.

The Horowhenua District Council have released a series of dates for drop-in sessions, to be held around the region in the next three weeks, and will finalise the development strategy in October.

The three concept designs focus on public space. One features a new space on the southeastern corner of the Queen St and Oxford St intersection.

Council urban designer Anna Wood said the green space would encourage people to explore the town, making it more environment and pedestrian-friendly.

Visualisations of lanes away from the main road and a pedestrian lane connection through Oxford St leading to the Levin public gardens, have also been released.

Wood said the Wellington Northern Corridor and the 10,000-person growth expected in Horowhenua between 2016 and 2036 are behind the Grow- ing Levin town centre development strategy.

‘‘It will be the guide to support positive change as our town and district grow. It’s very exciting.

‘‘We need to decide what sort of place we want Levin, as our largest town, to be, and how it should change and grow over the next 20 years.’’

Wood said council was looking at several different avenues for growth.

‘‘We know there is an opportunity to better provide for a broader range of retail offer within Levin’s town centre, a larger commercial base and an increase in the number of people living in the town centre.

‘‘We also know there is an opportunity to improve the quality of public space, prioritise pedestrians and cyclists and encourage more events and activities in the town centre.’’

No cost has been identified for the project yet.

Submitters can also share their thoughts via a questionnaire on the Horowhenua District Council website.
