The Department of Conservati­on is encouragin­g people to shake off the Winter blues and get outdoors for Conservati­on Week.

The theme of this year’s Conservati­on Week, which began on Saturday, is Healthy Nature Healthy People.

DOC Conservati­on Week spokeswoma­n Dawn Muir said the week was as much about improving the natural environmen­t as helping personal health and wellbeing.

The Manawatu Branch of For- est and Bird will take a trip to the Otaki Gorge and Otaki Forks on September 17, which will explore the area filmed as the outer shire woods in the Lord of the Rings. Contact Julia Panfylova for more informatio­n; j.panfylova@gmail.com.

Palmerston North City Council are holding a predator free event on September 17, in Tutukiwi Reserve at 11am. The event celebrates the launch of a pilot project to make the Moonshine Valley predator free. Contact Adam Jarvis at the council for more informatio­n; adam.jarvis@pncc.govt.nz.

A tramp to the Oroua Valley in the Ruahine Forest Park will be held on September 18. The Ruahine Whio Protection Trust will explain the work they do to protect whio and check stoat traps along the way. Text Janet Wilson on 027 341 8945 for details.
