An elderly woman is in a serious condition in hospital, one of seven injured in two separate car crashes in Kapiti on Tuesday.

The 87-year-old woman was involved in a crash near Otaki, which caused significant delays to traffic.

The crash involved three vehicles and happened shortly before 10am near the Otaki Gorge Rd intersection.

Two people, initially trapped in two separate vehicles, were cut from the wreckage.

The woman was flown to Palmerston North Hospital in a critical condition. She remains in a serious condition in the intensive care unit.

Another male patient involved in the crash had been discharged, a hospital spokesman said.

Another, a man in his 30s, was flown to Wellington Hospital in a serious condition, a Life Flight Westpac rescue helicopter spokeswoman said. He has now been transferred to Christchurch’s Burwood Hospital.

The crash was cleared and the road reopened shortly after 1pm.

The road was closed between Addington Rd and Otaki Gorge Rd for about three hours as emergency services and the serious crash unit attended.

The adult was found soon after the accident, and the pup was handed in to a local vet and collected from there.

Council environmental standards manager Jacquie Muir said she was happy the dogs had been found.

‘‘We’re happy to say both dogs have been found and are safe.’’

Later in the day a two-car crash on State Highway 1 near the Peka Peka Rd intersection caused major delays to traffic in both directions at Waikanae.

Emergency services were alerted to the crash shortly before 5pm.

Fire service communications shift manager Mike Wanoa said four people were treated for minor injuries by ambulance staff at the scene.

A witness who drove by the crash site said children were lying injured on the side of the road next to the two sedans that collided.
