On Sunday I was one of the more than 14,000 people who headed off for the Round the Bays event in Wellington. I wasn’t one of the elite runners who headed off early in the morning, just one of the pack of 9000 who lined up just after 9am. The sun wasn’t shining, but it was still and humid and you could feel the air of anticipation.

Around me were all types of people including 70 amazing Archilles athletes. These inspirational people from amputees to those recovering from strokes were guided around the course to Kilbirnie Park. The 6.5km entrants featured people of all levels of fitness, but as the sun came up and we headed closer to the finish line I felt proud to be part of this iconic event.

Each week for the past three months, we have brought you Rachel Grunwell’s great column on building up to the event. We hope you enjoy her final one.
