Fairview Ladies — On Tuesday, September 11 the ladies played the second round of the Tile Gallery Competition which was a nett round. We played the back nine which was in great condition and we also had a lovely still morning. Results: Cath Edwards 10, Sue Couper and Sharon Willetts 9, Kathleen Grammer 8, Christine Murphy and Anita Kelly 7, Pat Pepper 6.

Veterans — On September 13 the 9-hole Fairview vets teed off the white tees on the back nine holes. The competition for the day was a nett score, plus the number of putts. A strong westerly wind made for a very challenging day with a ll 12 players having very competitive scores. The winner on the day was Jim Blackburn with a nett of

33 + 17 putts = 50 points. Second was Peter Bartlett with a nett of

35 + 17 Putts = 52 points and third place was Peter Wilson with 36 Nett + 16 Putts = 52 points also. Waihi

Women’s 18 Hole — For such a beautiful warm sunny day on Saturday September 8, it was surprising that there were so few women in the field to play the first round in Strokeplay championships, 7th LGU, Lowrie Cup Par, and Karl Wilson Buttons competitions. Nett results: Sharon Deacon 73; Carol Leary, Jenny Gallaugher 74; Phillipa Harvey 76; Bev Ireland 78; Susan Mustard.

There were no complaints about the beautiful weather and 19 degrees on Wednesday, September 12. Nearly all of the GUR areas are in play and heaps of debris from felled trees just about burned away, vertidrained greens fast and true again, grass shoots appearing on the edges of the new bunkers — it makes players realise just how hard the greens staff have worked over the past few weeks to bring the course back to prime condition. Well done. Playing the lie for the first round of strokeplay championships, 7th LGU, Karl Wilson Buttons and Lowrie Cup par competitions, and with plenty of run, there were many very good scores. Nett results: Helen Tidswell, Edna Connolly, Glennis Burgess 69; Carol Leary, Jenny Gallaugher, June O’Reilly

70; Wendy Matutinovich 71; Diane Lewis, Mavis Bruce, Jenny Wilson 72; Nan Hoggard

Veterans — It is always satisfying if one plays under his or her handicap in a round of golf, and on Monday September

10, there were some exceptional scores among the 46 players in the field, the most outstanding being Gyan Prole’s 12 up on Par,

49 stableford and 13 strokes under his handicap. Not to be outdone by the men, Helen Tidswell returned a score 9 strokes up on Par, and 10 under her handicap. Two very memorable and exciting games of golf — well done.
