POLICE REPORT

-

For the past nine years the Bay of Plenty Tree Crops Association has had a large tree sale at the Katikati A&P Showgrounds in July.

This year the tree sale was set to move to the racecourse in Tauranga with expanded space to support more trees and more exhibitors, offering a one stop shop for customers gardening and planting necessities.

In March, at the peak of planning the tree sale, New Zealand went into lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic spreading across the world. Looming deadlines for advertising, tree orders nearing the cancellation deadline, minimum distancing issues and the uncertainty of even being out of isolation before the tree sale date, left the Tree Crops Association no choice but to cancel the tree sale, says vice chairperson, Laura Wright.

BOP Tree Crops, however grows a good supply of grafted apple trees each year, so for the next few weekends Tree Crop’s members will be attending markets around the area selling the apple trees grown over the past two years.

Several trees were at the Lion’s Moggie’s Market in Katikati on Saturday and at last Friday’s

Katikati Plant and Produce Market. The next venue is the Pahoia School car boot sale on July 26 9am-noon.

Sales will continue at the Katikati Plant and Produce Market on Fridays and Moggie’s Market until the trees are sold out.

The BOP Tree Crops Association looks forward to reinstating its annual tree sale in 2021, provided Covid-19 remains contained in NZ.

“The association appreciates the terrific support the BOP has given us over the past several years and is looking forward to an exciting 2021 tree sale.”

Winter is well and truly here together with the rain, wind and cold temperatures.

Unfortunately some people are not driving to these conditions and we have attended a number of crashes mainly on the highway. Most crashes could be avoided with a little of speed reduction and defensive driving.

Road working staff are also sick of speeding vehicles coming through the road works on the highways while they are working on site. They need the public to slow down to the designated limits to maintain their safety please.

■ At about 1.30pm last Wednesday we attended a single vehicle crash on Waterford Rd. A vehicle had left the road and struck and toppled a lamp pole. The driver and her children were uninjured. Fatigue is believed to be a factor in this crash. This is why it is important to heed signs of tiredness and pull over for stops.

■ A 21-year-old Katikati man has been charged with driving with excess breath alcohol and dangerous driving in relation to a crash on Middlebrook Drive on the evening of June 30. A power pole, power box, trees, and a fence were destroyed in the crash.

The driver will appear in the Tauranga District Court on July 30.

■ Sometime during the day on Saturdaysomebody has entered a Polley Cres address and stolen a Samsung tablet and charger. There was no sign of forced entry to the locked address.

■ On the morning of July 8, a 47-year-old Tokoroa man was arrested in Katikati after police approached an address looking for the man who was wanted for breaching his bail conditions. Upon seeing the police he ran, but was caught a short distance away.

He has been charged with escaping police custody and appeared in court the following day. He has been remanded in custody until August 27.
