GOLF

Katikati

Fairview 9 Hole Ladies — Last Tuesday (July 14) was a gem in an otherwise very wet week. With the previous week being rained out, there was a good turnout albeit reduced with school holiday duties obviously paramount. Winter golf does bring challenges but a slightly reduced field of 30 Ladies still enjoyed the competition — the haggle being paid out on best putting for the day. Front 9 — 1st Marilyn Payne 14, 2nd Sandy Knowlson 15, 3rd equal Dianne Litten, Verona McLeod 16, 5th equal Astrid Martin, Cath Edwards and Carol Fleet with 17. Back 9 — 1st equal Jan Hickey, Mary Furness and Collette Payne with 18, 4th Christine Murphy with 19.

Fairview 18 Hole Ladies — The competition on July 14 was stableford and Hidden Hole. Stableford winners — 1st Alison Kennard 37, 2nd Rosemary O’Brien 36, 3rd Cyndy Dean 35, 4th Patricia Hollis 33, 5th on countback Sandra Hurley 32. Hidde Hole winners — Lesley Rayner and Carol Bones. Waihi

Women’s 18 Hole — On Friday, July 10 Waihi hosted the Bay of Plenty District Association Central zone Barometer Day, with teams competing from Tauranga, Omokoroa, Otumoetai, Omanu, Fairview, Mt Maunganui, Te Puke, and Waihi. The weather was stunning with perfect conditions for golf. Every Club fielded a team of two players from each division — Silver, Bronze, and Veterans playing a Handicap Matchplay competition over 18 holes, and two Nine hole players over Nine holes, earning 1 point for a win, one

1⁄2 a point for a half, and zero for a loss. Playing for Waihi were Carol Leary, Wendy Matutinovich, Mavis Bruce, Adele Gunning, Kristine Gascoigne, Klara Ingle, Judith Dee, Margaret Meldrum. Waihi ‘s team won the day with 74.5 points, followed by Omanu 67.5, and Omokoroa third with 65.5.

Why Barometer Day? It was first played for and won by Te Puke in 1989 when the Central zone extended their numbers of Clubs to include Waihi and Fairview, bringing the numbers to eight. It was intended as a yardstick to estimate how the clubs fared against each other in a handicap matchplay interclub competition. Someone presented a very grand barometer as a trophy, and ever since, the annual event has been known as Barometer Day.
