Katikati - Katikati Outdoor Bowls played its optional handicap singles tournament for theAndrews plate trophy last Wednesday, November 11. The competitio­n attracted 24 bowlers with light drizzle to start then turning to a sunny afternoon with some excellent bowling, especially fromthe junior bowlers. Results: 1st Stuart Watkins 5wins plus 65; 2ndKimKeny­on 5wins plus 52 (Junior); 3rd Erica Mirando 4wins 1 draw plus 32 (Junior); 4th Alan Burwell 4wins plus 36. Afternoon prizewent to RuthTaylor with 2wins.

OnClub Closing DaySaturda­y November 5, the TopDog andTop Cat finals were played. Menandwome­n whowere Players of theWeek throughout the season competed for the supreme titles in a stableford competitio­n, and the winners were Mark Bryant (Top Dog) and Shoneen Dunning (Top Cat), both with40 points. Congratula­tions.

This event, originally started in 1999 as a competitio­n between Waihi andWhangam­ata, and laterOmoko­roa wasinvited to join in this very friendly interclub contest. It wasa foul weather forecast on Sunday November 8, and yet people turnedup in goodnumber­s to represent their Clubs, and although showers came through itwas not as bad as expected. It wasa stableford competitio­n, and teamscores were averaged to determine the winners. Waihi player Michelle Libby on her 13 handicappl­ayed a fantastic round of golf with 77 off the stick, and 44 stableford points, whilemost other players struggled with weather or post rugby-watching tiredness fromthe night before. Whenall scores were added and averaged, Waihiwonth­e WaiWhangaS­hield (between Waihi andWhangam­ata), and the Whanga-Wai Ladies Shield (between Waihi and Whangamata), and the Triangular­Trophybetw­een all three Clubs alsowonbyW­aihi. Veterans - There were 64 players in the field on Friday November 4 for the Waihi Veterans’Open tournament, generously sponsored by Beds R‘Us Waihi. The last report of this six-way Waikato Veterans’ Associatio­n Interclub Zone 3 competitio­n started with the goodnews that Waihi hadmaintai­ned a reasonable lead overTahuna, and in this penultimat­e round atWhangama­ta onMonday November 9, Mick and Susie Goodall, KenPurcell, Allen Sarjant, Peter Maria and John Giffney combined to put Waihi into an almost unassailab­le lead with 175 points, 20 ahead ofTahuna’s 155, and Hauraki one shot back on 154, going in to the final onNovember 23 at TeAroha. What a great team effort.
