Local knowledge key to trees

Have you noticed the bad state of our street trees lately?

Many of our street trees look very old. Sick and dead trees are being cut down and not replaced.

In my view, branches and dead trees are also endangering the traffic and pedestrians.

I understand pruning, trimming, and shaping of trees and shrubs is not part of the current council contract, so we are ending up with unsightly and fewer trees.

Cherry trees recently planted in Beach Rd reserves are not maintained at all, and it shows.

Supporting stakes are missing, trees broken, pruning has not been done and most trees are not growing into beautiful flowering cherry trees like they have in Greerton.

I understand that there may be money in the new Long-Term Plan for tree maintenance.

Is it desirable to appoint a local part-time gardener or arborist to maintain our trees and shrubs in streets and parks? (Abridged)
