■ On Monday May 3, Carol Leary, Wendy Matutinovich, Jenny Tubman and Jacquie Bain represented Waihi at Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty District Associations Club Teams final. Twentyone teams played Fourball Best Ball Strokeplay format, with nett scores of the two pairs in each club team added together at the end of the round to determine the team’s score. Taking out the day with fantastic scoring was Ohope team’s 125 nett, followed by Te Teko 130, then Tauranga and Omokoroa 133 third equal. Waihi was not too far behind with 137. Well done team Waihi.

Veterans - Several players had made themselves available to make up the teams throughout the six rounds in the Waikato Veterans Zone 3 round robin leading up to the Zone final. In the Nuggets’ squad were Allen Sarjant, Ken Purcell, John Giffney, Tim Parish, Maurice Joyce, Peter Maria, Earle White, and Jock Stronach. In Quartz squad were Allen Smith, John Libby, Mick Goodall, Susie Goodall, Rodger Bagshaw, Michelle Libby, Francis Gascoigne, Jim Evans, John Purkis, Brian Robinson and Tom Rowbotham. It was all well worthwhile with the coveted Lion Brewery trophy for Zone 3 Pennants in The Nuggets’ hands at the testing Te Aroha course on April 23, with Quartz in third place only four shots behind. Both teams were enthusiastically organised, encouraged, and mentored throughout the series by Tim Parish, who was appropriately thanked for his dedication by all players in the two squads. Now Nuggets’ team (Allen Sarjant, Ken Purcell, John Giffney, Earle White and Maurice Joyce and Tim Parish), have to hold it all together at Paeroa for the District final. Numbers at golf on Monday May 3 were well up for the 4th Nett medal round with both successful pennant team members warmly welcomed back into the fold by Captain John Purkis after their days away campaigning on Waihi’s behalf.
