Poutama programme benefits Rangatahi and Metalfix

-

Metalfix Solutions Katikati and its two new apprentices are thriving thanks to the Poutama Pathways to Employment scheme administered by the Katikati Community Centre.

“I had struggled to find staff to keep up with demand for our products and services and employing Noah and Lockie has helped both me and my business,” says Metalfix owner James Kirkpatrick.

Lockie and Noah are also grateful for the opportunities James and the programme have given them and the variety of work they undertake.

“It’s been really good having the chance to get into work through the course and I’m enjoying learning new skills, especially welding. It’s improved my selfconfidence too,” says Noah. Lockie is also enjoying his new job. “I had struggled to find employment before. I am grateful to be given this chance. I really enjoy the fabrication side of the work.”

James says he is pleased with his decision to be part of the programme. “Noah and Lockie have been keen to take up the challenge and learn the skills needed and to take on further training, including a welding course.

“The support they have received f rom Poutama Youth Employment coach Tim Spurgeon has been a real asset too.

“I would encourage other local businesses looking for staff to consider working with Poutama to find new employees and give young people a chance.” Established in 2017, Metalfix Solutions specialises in a range of products designed for aesthetics, privacy and functionality. This includes high-end residential and commercial projects such as aluminium louvre roofs, aluminium canopies, pedestrian gates, driveway gates, balustrades and building facades.

The Poutama Pathways to Employment programme is a Ministry of Social Developmentfunded 13-week course for young people aged 16-24 who are not currently in employment, education or training. Once rangatahi graduate f rom the course into employment or training they continue to be supported with an additional 12 months pastoral care.

The Katikati Community Centre has been delivering the training since 2022 through which young people learn steps towards gaining employment – or towards training/apprenticeships – including investigating careers, goal planning, CV writing, driver’s licences, employability skills, preparing for interviews and filling forms and applying for allowances. The Poutama programme is working closely with a number of businesses who need staff now, so they welcome all enquiries.
