This is im­por­tant for con­ser­va­tion work be­cause na­tive plants from dif­fer­ent parts of the coun­try have dif­fer­ent genes. So even if they look the same, they grow dif­fer­ently. This means a plant may not sur­vive well in the wild if it is planted too far away from where its seed was col­lected.
