Autumn is a good time to sow carrot seed. Carrots come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours. Fast growing varieties and cute globe shaped or baby carrots are ideal for growing in containers.

1 Fill a large container with planting mix. (Your container should be at least 25cm deep and have holes in the bottom for drainage). Or dig a sunny patch of garden soil until it is loose and crumbly, without stones or lumpy bits. 2 Water gently with a watering can.

3 Carefully sprinkle your seeds onto the damp soil and then cover with a thin layer of soil or weed free seed raising mix. 4 Check every day and water gently with a watering can to keep your soil damp (but not soaking wet). Be patient! Carrots take time to grow. After two to three weeks you should see the first tiny green leaves. 5 Once your seedlings are 3-5cm tall, its time to carefully remove a few to make room for others to grow. This is called thinning. Leave about 2-3cm between each seedling.
