A Little Polynesian Charm

- By Gayle Dickson

What’s the point of getting away to a remote Pacific Island if you’re clustered with hundreds of other guests, fighting for space in the pool or waiting ages for a cocktail? None, in my opinion, hence my delight on a recent visit on checking into the Little Polynesian.

With only ten over-beach bungalows and four garden units, the Little Polynesian offers a true slice of tropical paradise. On checking into a new location, I usually take time to investigate the room or suite thoroughly; however, my over-beach bungalow offered such a tantalising vista of white sandy beach, tall swaying palms and the crystal clear waters of the lagoon, that I lingered only long enough to swap my travelling garb for my togs, grab a towel and sunblock.

Right outside my door was a large deck area, complete with daybed under a gazebo boasting comfy seat pads and bolster cushions. I debated whether to order up a cocktail and just spend the rest of the afternoon there, but a walk along the beach won over. A few steps down and I was on the sand and just metres from the water’s edge. I paddled about and was struck immediately by the fact that there were no shrill shrieks of kids – not on the beach nor in the adjacent infinity pool. Aha … the realisation then struck that this was an adults-only resort!

After collecting a few shells and wading a wee bit longer, I made my way to the pool and bar area. A tall glass in hand, I deposited myself in a comfy lounge chair. The sun was a tad too hot so, while the oversized umbrella came in rather handy, it wasn’t long before I had to make

my way into the pool to cool off. What a delightful surprise to discover it was salt water and not over-chlorinated like most resort pools!

I could easily have just flitted between my lounger and the pool all afternoon, but I headed back to my bungalow to do a couple of hours worth of emails and phone calls, taking this opportunity to investigate my accommodation in more depth.

The lounge area is spacious and overlooks the deck and the beach. The high ceilings allow the breeze to circulate. What I loved most was that the sleeping area, while behind the lounge area, was slightly raised, permitting a view of the sea and sand from the bed. The large windows did have privacy shades, but I was ever so grateful for the addition of the see-through blinds so that the perfect view was not obscured!

Behind the bedhead was the massive ensuite, complete with rain shower, spa bath, dual vanities and a door leading to a private courtyard with outdoor shower. All the amenities were to hand, including a television, bar fridge and 24-hour room service. Room rates include a tropical breakfast and free use of the kayaks and snorkelling gear.

Just prior to going to press I was informed that the Little Polynesian had been named the Cook Islands' Leading Boutique Hotel by World Travel Awards, as voted by travel and tourism professionals worldwide. I have absolutely no reason to question this sophisticated playground for “grown-ups” placing at the top!
