The Langham, London

- By Gary Dickson

You know that thought that crosses your mind when you’ve just arrived at your destination…off a long haul flight… it’s early in the morning and you’re making your way to your hotel? “I wonder if my room will be ready when I get there?”

Normally, the answer is “No, I’m afraid not sir. Can I take your mobile number and I’ll call you as soon as it’s ready?”

Well, after two long haul flights from Sydney recently I arrived in to London’s Heathrow at 5.30am, jumped on The Tube, heading to The Langham, London with that exact thought running through my head. There was no need to worry… my room was available straight away.

The Langham in London is the original Grand Hotel and has been welcoming guests since 1865. After a remarkable restoration, The Langham’s superbly styled rooms and suites radiate the warmth of an elegant stately home.

Located in the heart of The West End, with Oxford Circus tube station less than five minutes walk away, The Langham London is the best and most central place you can stay at to embrace the shopping delights of Regent, Bond and Oxford Streets. The rest of central London, including Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square are a short stroll away as well.

The variety of room types available start with Superior Rooms of 301 sq. ft., Deluxe Rooms at 355 sq. ft., through to a Family Room at 420 sq. ft., all the way up to the crème-de-la-crème – the Sterling Suite at 4,844 sq. ft…although at in excess of £20,000 per night that may be a touch out of the reach of most travellers.

All-in-all The Langham London boasts 380 rooms – 344 spacious guest rooms, 3 apartments with kitchens and 33 Private Suites, all superbly presented in what has to be one of the most stunning buildings in all of London.

But it’s all very well having the best rooms, in the best location, in the best property in town if you don’t have the staff and services to back it up.

As many of you will know, I have stayed at some of the best hotels and resorts in the world. The Langham London would be at the very top when it comes to the quintessential luxury experience of being looked after whilst away from home. Let’s call it The Langham Experience…because that is what it is. An Experience!

Spread across two floors, the new Langham Club redefines “the hotel club” concept with the ultimate in exclusivity, modern conveniences and attentive service…and the food is exquisite, all created in collaboration with celebrity chefs – Albert Roux O.B.E. and Michel Roux Jr.

Club privileges include a continental and hot breakfast selection, fine champagne and cocktails available throughout the day and all complemented by evening canapés. You can also impress any clients you might need to meet with, as The Langham Club boardroom and media room are available for two hours… complimentary (subject to availability and conditions).

The dining options at The Langham London are numerous and all continue the theme of the property with top quality produce, service and indulgence. ‘Roux at the Landau’ is their elegant restaurant and will entice you with classically constructed dishes using only the finest ingredients.

Make sure you take time to enjoy the ‘original’ High Tea at Palm Cove, an indulgent ritual that continues today and has been copied by many hotels around the globe.

And, to round off that hard day of enjoying my favourite city in the world, make sure you sip a few cocktails, beers, tea or whatever is your choice of late night beverage at Artesian.

For four consecutive years Artesian has been voted (by Drinks International) as The World’s Best Bar… high praise indeed.

The bar is named after the 360-foot deep artesian well that is under the hotel and its specialty are rum creations, as well as some very unique vessels to imbibe from. Even the ice is special – it is produced using the latest technology. Artesian’s ice is purer, colder and with a higher density – which adds up to making it last longer and keeping your drinks chilled to perfection.

Over 150 years ago The Langham London instantaneously became London’s ‘Grand Hotel’. With the renovations completed over the past few years she has taken it to another level. A level that has seen The Langham London maintain the mantra of one of THE top hotels in the world.
