How did you get interested in made to measure menswear?

In 2008 I had my first taste of visiting a Hong Kong tailor based in Auckland for a few days. I got measured up, spent some time choosing the fabrics for my suit and shirts, then waited anxiously for it to arrive. Everything arrived; I loved it. I looked and felt great in my clothes for the first time. The whole experience got me very excited about made-to-measure clothing - the start of my journey to create menswear that was exceptional in quality and exceptional value.

How did Canvas Cut start?

Talking with my friends and business associates, it became obvious men wanted nice gear but hated the shopping process and putting an outfit together that was on trend. We realised there were lots of men wanting the convenience of a made to measure service that is mobile and comes to them, assists them in the decision process and guarantees quality and fit.

How did you learn about the garment industry?

I’ve always had a keen sense of style and talent with colour. I added to my knowledge by working with a Saville Row tailor and alongside other skilled tailors overseas in the development of the Canvas Cut clothing range. Through this process we have incorporated traditional canvassing construction methods for suit jackets with an emphasis on European styling. This gives us the expertise to achieve a fantastic fit and excellent garment structure. Our garments are individually made by hand-picked tailors.

What’s the process if I book an appointment?

Our mobile stylist will visit you at your home or office. They take a full set of measurements and show you our carefully selected range of shirting and suiting fabrics. As a trained stylist, they are able to give advice on what styles and colours you will look good in. A few weeks later, the personally tailored garment is delivered to you by the stylist to check the fit and make any needed adjustments. Should any alterations be required, this is paid for by Canvas Cut as part of are perfect fit guarantee. We are passionate about making sure our customers look good and feel great in their clothes.

What differentiates a Canvas Cut suit?

While the majority of men’s jackets in NZ use polyester fusing for structure in their jackets, there is NO fusing in a Canvas Cut jacket. You’ll notice the difference by the soft drape of the garment and it’s amazing lightness. Our pants are fully lined to the ankle for coolness and comfort. The jacket and pant inside lining is 100% silk cupro, so the entire suit is 100% natural fabrics that breathe and are fabulous to wear. The tailoring method we use is detailed and exacting, creating a suit that is beautiful and amazing value for the quality.

What type of fabrics are used?

We never compromise fabric quality and this is evident in the finished garment. We travel the world to source the best natural fabrics at the best possible prices for both our suits and shirts. We are absolutely committed to natural fibres from an environmental and wearability factor. Natural fibres breathe and drape differently to manufactured fabrics and simply feel fabulous to wear. Once you’ve worn beautiful 100% natural fabrics, you’ll know the difference and won’t want anything else.

Does Canvas Cut only supply suits and shirts?

No, we have a wide range of products including custom made tuxedos, sports coats, shoes, belts, pocket chiefs and collar stays. If you need something a little different for special occasions or you are hard to fit, we love meeting special requests!

What feedback have you had from your customers?

That they are so happy they don’t need to go on any more tedious shopping trips; the frustration of putting together an outfit is gone. Some regular comments include: they save time; the quality of the suits is amazing for the value; they have never looked better; the assistance with styling decisions was unexpected and extremely helpful at no extra cost.
