Young star needs support

Parmilar needs help to pay for $250 talent centre course and gear

Parmilar Ghimire is not afraid to tackle other players for the ball and it was this skill and ability to pass the ball that secured her a place to play for the Manawatu¯ Under-10s Federation Talent Centre.

However, playing in the Talent Centre comes with costs.

The 9-year-old’s family cannot afford to pay for the programme costs of $250 and $80 for the football gear which Parmiliar will wear for training and match days.

Parmilar is wearing a pair of football boots that are too small, says Women’s Football development officer Manawatu¯ Jess Robinson.

“We are applying to the Central Football Hardship Fund to cover the costs, and if approved the fund will only cover half of the $330.

“The cost of the programme is for 28 training sessions and two full match days,” Jess said.

She said the Talent Centre has been astounded by the kindness of the local football community who have already been in touch offering their kids’ secondhand boots.

At the time of writing, Parmilar was offered a new pair of top-of-the-line boots which came with a generous discount from Stirling Sports.

Parmilar’s brother Pukar is 7 and also plays football. Jess said Parmiliar and Pukar followed their cousin into football who joined them to play with North End.

“They’ve grown to enjoy the sport and made friends from club involvement.”

Parmilar then trialled for the Talent Centre where she showed a good understanding of the basics of football.

“She was so happy to be playing and to be involved with the other girls. Parmilar had a good touch and ability to pass the ball, as well as not being afraid to tackle other players with the ball.”

The Manawatu¯ Under-10s Federation Talent Centre kicks off this weekend with 14 teams involving close to 200 players and 29 highly qualified local volunteer coaches.

Parmilar was 3 1⁄2 months old when her family left Nepal for New Zealand.
