Going cage-free

-

BP has joined the international movement calling for cage-free eggs.

Whole cage eggs are already off the shelves across all 98 BP stores nationwide, making it the first petrol and retail outlet in New Zealand to join the campaign and attracted praise from Save Animals from Exploitation (SAFE).

The old method of caging hens has come under attack all over the world and, under law in New Zealand, battery cages are to be removed by egg producers by 2022.

Before now New Zealand’s battery hens each had a living space about the size of an A4 sheet of paper.

These conditions cause stress and pain and deprives hens of their most basic behavioural needs, SAFE says.

With the public no longer accepting this treatment of hens, more egg brands are going cage-free.

Also, with the help of SAFE, more New Zealand food and grocery retail outlets will take responsibility to help end the cage age.
