$100,000 pick6 split five ways

‘‘It’s a great way for punters to win big from, in a number of cases, a modest investment . . . TAB spokesman Michael Dore

Five punters from around the country brightened up a wet and windy Saturday by each landing a share of Saturday’s $100,000 terminating Turbo Pick6.

Through varying methods they successfully picked all six winners in a mixture of thoroughbred races from Ruakaka and New Plymouth pocketing a $20,000 each for their luck and selection skills.

‘‘It’s a great way for punters to win big from, in a number of cases, a modest investment and the terminating Pick6 promotion has been running throughout July with good support from punters,’’ said Michael Dore, head of TAB betting. ‘‘A few pots have gone over the $100,000 mark while we’ve topped up a couple but they have certainly created interest.’’

The previous week a $16 investment won a Pick6 investor a healthy $36,630 payout.

The final $100,000 July pot will operate next Saturday on the Rotorua and Otaki meetings.

With more than 40 races remaining in the 2016 jumping season, the TAB last week made a decision to pay out on the most wins for 2016 fixed odds jumps jockey market.

Backers of 20-year-old Shaun Fannin were the big winners from the Friday announcement, some of them having taken the $51 odds when the TAB opened the market in early May. A win on the opening day of the season at Riverton on May 4 saw Fannin’s odds trimmed to $31, further support brought him into $14, and as the winners mounted his price shortened top $1.05 and finally $1.01.

Combining with Kevin Myers for a perfect three wins from as many starts at Phar Lap Raceway on Friday, Fannin moved to 21 victories for the season.

The interesting thing is that the current jumps season does not end until late September. The TAB assessed the risk as negligible around Fannin being toppled.

Meantime nominations for the Makfi Challenge Stakes (1400m), Windsor Park Plate (1600m) and Livamol Classic (2040m) have been released along with TAB Futures Betting for the three Group 1 races that make up the Hawke’s Bay Triple Crown.

Kawi is $5 early favourite for the first two legs while Hasselhoof is $6 favourite in the third leg.
