Novice fighters turns it on

- MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

Palmerston North’s James Bramley beat Corin Braddick of Kapiti in the main event of Scorpion Gym’s novice fight day on Saturday.

It was the only judged fight of the day and it was a mixed martial arts battle between the two.

Braddick started strong in the first round, but Bramley, of Palmerston North gym Fight Shop NZ, stepped it up in the second.

He defended against a strong triangle submission attempt, and had an effective ground and pound to take the unanimous decision.

The rest of the event was arranged to give new fighters experience before putting them on a serious fight card.

In the novice fights, Matt Hainsworth (Scorpion) and Max Hayward (MTI Wellington) had a technical, back-and-forth battle in what was good fight for beginners

Shiloh Jenkins (Scorpion) fought two fights, the first against Josh Lay-robertson (Kapiti) and the second against a very technical Anton Mcintosh (J’s Gym, Palmerston North) in his debut appearance.

Freja Hudspith-carlstrom (Scorpion) had a strong debut performance in a well-matched bout with Kelsey Kauri (J’s Gym).

Other fights were between Alexi De Jonge (J’s Gym) and Josh Giddy (New Plymouth), and Kaleb Curran (J’s Gym) against Kahanui Karkeek (Kapiti).

There were about 150 people at the event, with the next one planned for August 27.
