Four lambs for Manawatu ewe

- JILL GALLOWAY

Four lambs have been born to a ewe on a lifestyle block at Halcombe.

The owner Jill van Weert said the lambs and ewe were in a barn.

‘‘I came out and found she’d had three, two were with her, another lying some way away, and the fourth had its head out.’’

She was surprised by the number of lambs.

‘‘The ewe was huge before lambing. I thought she might be having triplets.’’

Van Weert said the ewe accepted all the lambs, and they had all had a feed of colostrum from her.

But she said if the lambs and ewe had not been put in the barn at her 5 hectare farm, she doubted they would have survived the heavy rain during the night.

They were being kept warm.

Van Weert said she would probably leave two lambs with the ewe, and hand-raise the other two.
