Crunch time in club hockey competitio­n as playoffs loom

The semifinali­sts have been found for next weekend after the results went the way of current form in the final round of the club hockey competitio­n at the twin turfs on Saturday.

In the men’s semifinals next weekend Massey will play Marist, and High School Hockey Club will play College.

On Saturday defending champions Massey comfortabl­y beat College 4-1.

The game was close early on, before Massey broke the deadlock when Mitchell Cronin was on target with a flick at a penalty corner.

Massey kept control for the rest of the half.

College created chances, but final touches went wide of the target.

Massey’s aggressive defence paid off in the second half, earning a couple of penalty corners that Cronin converted.

Massey got another goal to seal the result, before College got a late consolatio­n goal.

Marist survived a late flurry by Tech to lead at the break.

Tech opened the second spell, converting a penalty stroke.

The game fell to a pedestrian pace as Tech and Marist played an open style in the last quarter.

Marist recovered momentum to finish the match on a high, scoring two quick goals, to win 5-1.

Josh Scott got four goals and Jake Beaman one goal.

High School Hockey Club Palmerston North Boys’ High second XI

won 14-0 over a

that was substituti­ng for Boys’ High first XI, who are away at the Super 8.

In the women’s semifinals next weekend, High School Hockey Club will play Massey in one semifinal and College will meet Palmerston North Girls’ High School in the other.

to win 7-2. HSHC started at a fast pace, pressuring Girls’ High and earned two goals to Pippa Norman.

Girls’ High slowly gained momentum, finishing strongly with a goal by Megan Phillips minutes before the break.

After the break Girls’ High started well with Jenna Peel on hand to score, before Maria Reiche scored two quick goals for HSHC.

That turned the game again and Tayla Hansen and Norman scored late goals to seal the result for HSHC. won 5-0 over with most of the goals coming in

College Massey

the second spell.

College won the opening exchanges and broke the deadlock in the first quarter to lead 1-0 at the break.

Massey pushed ahead and competed well, with scoring chances squashed by College’s defence.

College extended their lead with two goals. College’s scored two late goals. Teri Kitson and Natasha Cowx got doubles and Rachel Sax completed the College goal scorers.
