Youth expo showcases health

A free event geared at promoting health, fun and support for Horowhenua youth drew hundreds of people into Levin’s Te Takere centre.

The Horowhenua Youth and Wellbeing Expo, held in Te Takere’s Youth Space on Friday, was attended by about 600 young people, and included scheduled visits by groups from Horowhenua and Waiopehu colleges in Levin, and Manawatu College in Foxton.

Organised by the Horowhenua District Council, the expo promoted youth wellbeing by showcasing activities and services that focused on good health, fun and support for local youths.

There were 20 exhibitors and demonstrations from community groups, organisations and individuals, including Levin Adventure Park mural projectmanaging artist Jonny 4Higher who painted a mural over lockers that will store Youth Space games.

4Higher said he appreciated getting to have a lot of one-on-one talks with students and sharing techniques on how to make a living as a freelance artist.

‘‘It was a cool day, pretty mellow. I always enjoy meeting young people and seeing where they’re at, and getting their thoughts on the world.’’

At the Horowhenua Learning Centre booth, the trust unveiled a partnership with polytech UCOL offering 10 new tertiary courses in the area.

HLC quality advisor Shayne Hill said the partnership was to be formally announced this month, but both organisations thought the expo was a good opportunity to give people a sneak peak of what was coming up.
