The Jewel dies in freak accident

- JAMIE SEARLE Fairfax NZ

A freak accident has claimed the life of valuable broodmare The Jewel.

The 17-year-old mare died at Wentwood Grange Stud in Cambridge recently, Southland coowner Tony Dennis said.

‘‘They were doing her teeth. She had the gag on and suddenly reared up, went sideways and struck her head on the ground.

‘‘She died virtually straight away.’’

The Jewel was not in foal. She haemorrhaged last year when foaling a Savabeel colt.

The colt will be offered at the Karaka sales on January 30 to February 5. Two other colts owned by the Dennis brothers are also entered (a Savabeel from The Glitzy One, an O’reilly from The Pearler).

The brothers own three daughters of The Jewel. They are The Glitzy One, The Diamond One and a 2-year-old by Darci Brahma.

One of The Jewel’s sons, The Bold One, is launching his stud career at Grangewilliam Stud in south Wanganui this season.

By O’reilly and out of the 2003 New Zealand Broodmare of the Year The Grin, The Jewel was a champion 3-year-old filly in the 2002-03 season.

Her 11 wins included Group I victories in the One Thousand Guineas (Riccarton) and International Stakes (Te Rapa).

She won the Group III Doomben Roses and was second in the Group I Queensland Oaks in Brisbane in 2003.

The five broodmares the brothers have grazing at Wentwood Grange Stud are The Diamond One, The Glitzy One, The Solitaire, The Dazzler and The Pearler.

Attempts to cure The Bishop’s atrial fibrillation complaint have failed. He suffered the heart problem when finishing last of 11 in a rating 85 2200m at Wingatui in June. The Bishop has been retired.
