Top schools teams in action during tournament week
Manawatu secondary schools will be sending their sports teams to the far-flung reaches of the country next week for winter tournament week.
The Palmerston North Girls’ High School first XI team are competing in the Federation Cup national tournament at North Harbour, starting on Monday.
Girls’ High finished 13th last year and this year are in pool D with Nelson College for Girls, Tauranga Girls’ College and Villa Maria College (Christchurch).

The Palmerston North Boys’ High School first XI will be looking to improve on their fifth-place finish last year at the Rankin Cup in Wellington.
They are in pool E with Pakuranga College, Rangitoto College and Tauranga Boys’ College.
Levin’s Waiopehu College had a successful tournament last year, finishing 10th, and are in pool G with Pukekohe High School, St Patrick’s Silverstream and Wairarapa College.
The lower-level Rosemary O’brien Cup tournament is at the twin turfs in Palmerston North.
Feilding High School and the Girls’ High second XI are competing.
In the Boys’ High first XI are at the national secondary schools championships in Papamoa. They finished 12th last year and this time they have Mt Roskill Grammar School, Wellington College and Tauranga Boys’ College in their pool.
The Girls’ High first XI are at Nelson this year, having finished fifth last season.
In their pool is Wellington Girls’ College, Sacred Heart Girls’ College (New Plymouth) and Macleans College (Auckland).
There are four Manawatu

schools competing in division one at the lower North Island secondary schools championships at Wanganui.
Manukura are seeded third, Girls’ High eighth, Feilding 12th and Nga Tawa Diocesan School 32nd.
Finals are on Friday and the top five schools will qualify for the national tournament in Wellington later in the year.
In Girls’ High will have high hopes being seeded third at the national tournament in Hamilton.
Boys’ High are seeded fourth in division one.

There are round-robin games from Monday to Thursday, then playoff games on Thursday and Friday.
Manukura qualified as Manawatu’s entry at the national secondary schools competition in Auckland.
Manukura are in pool A with Auckland schools St Paul’s College, Aorere College and Otahuhu College.
Pool games run from Monday to Wednesday, with playoff games on Thursday and Friday.

Boys’ High has three teams entered and Freyberg High School has two boys team and a mixed team. Otherwise, there are only three teams from Auckland and two from Tauranga.
Jae Lee is Manawatu’s best hope in the individual events, seeded fifth in the under-19 grade.
The national top four finals are at the Arena and Sport and Rugby Institute next Friday and Sunday.
The winners of the four regions (Blues, Chiefs, Hurricanes and South Island) will play off to decide

The entries will depend on the regional finals this weekend, but Feilding High School could have their first XV in the girls and co-ed finals.
In Palmerston North is hosting the AA zone three qualifying tournament at Arena from Wednesday to Saturday, where teams will be trying to qualify for the national championships in Palmerston North next month.
Feilding and Boys’ High are competing in the boys competition and Feilding and Girls’ High in the girls.
