Cut out the mistakes, Mcfadden tells Warriors

- DAVID LONG

""he individual errors that players have made, we just can't have that at this level." Andrew Mcfadden

Warriors coach Andrew Mcfadden says the team need to shake off the disappointments from the past two weeks, hope for a bit of luck and finish the season well.

Defeats to the Rabbitohs and Cowboys has taken the Warriors’ fate out of their hands and they need the Titans to lose their remaining games against the Panthers and Cowboys, while beating the Tigers and Eels.

If this happens the Warriors will finish the season in the top eight. But that’s a big if and Mcfadden said it’s frustrating their campaign has got to this point

‘‘There is no doubt that there’s a lot of disappointment to let the opportunity go where it was in our hands,’’ Mcfadden said yesterday.

‘‘Our performances in the last two weeks haven’t been great and that’s disappointing, but we’re still trying hard, we’re still working and we’ve got to focus on the two games.’’

But there needs to be an instant turnaround from the Warriors when they host the Tigers on Sunday and the biggest problem that needs sorting as far as Mcfadden is concerned is cutting out the errors that have crept back into their game.

‘‘It’s frustrating that it’s happening in the last couple of weeks, that’s for sure. Because when we had a consistent run it wasn’t part of our game,’’ he said.

‘‘We’ve had a few changes in our team unfortunately in the last couple of weeks and that has an impact on the cohesion, but the individual errors that players have made, we just can’t have that at this level.’’

A hamstring injury to winger Ken Maumalo, which could be season ending, has resulted in a quick recall for Tuimoala Lolohea, who was relegated to the reserves last week after some performances at fullback.

Lolohea was demoted so he could find confidence in his game again. That may not have happened in just 80 minutes of footy, but with the Warriors in the situation they’re in, they need to have their most talented players on the field and playing at wing won’t be as tough defensively for Lolohea as fullback was.

‘‘I thought he had a really energetic game on the weekend for our NSW Cup side,’’ Mcfadden said.

‘‘The opportunity has come up poor because of Ken’s injury and it’s not like Tui hasn’t played wing before.

‘‘He’s playing alongside Blake Ayshford, who he has played with before. At the moment we need to get the quality people on the field and we’ve got to go out and have a crack.’’

Mcfadden didn’t want to go into details on what he’d been unhappy with in Lolohea’s game over the past couple of months, but it appears unlikely he’ll be wearing a No 1 jersey for the club in the future.

‘‘There are some defensive deficiencies in his game and the fullback position is really tough,’’ he said. ’’There’s nowhere to hide and he hasn’t had a lot of practice at it, that’s why I haven’t been too critical of him, because he is learning that position.

‘‘We lost Roger [Tuivasasheck], Roger is our No 1 fullback here.

‘‘When you have an injury like that someone’s got to fill the void and we felt he was the best person to do that, but he’s had some issues with it.’’

Meanwhile, Mcfadden has rubbished any suggestions the Broncos’ Matt Gillett will be joining the club next season, despite the second rower saying on Wednesday he ‘‘might be making a transition across the ditch.’’

‘‘I think he’s got you all,’’ Mcfadden said of the media reaction to Gillett’s comment.

‘‘That came from left field to be honest and I don’t think he knows what over the ditch means.

‘‘He might have meant over the border or something like that.’’
