A 24-year-old man who fell off the roof of a Palmerston North bar, suffering serious injuries, had attempted to sneak into the bar earlier in the evening.

Emergency services were called to The Daily bar in Main St about 12.50am on Sunday.

The Daily bar owner Ricky Quirk said it appeared the man had tried to get into the bar through a back gate earlier in the evening.

‘‘Security got him, then he lined up in the queue.’’

However, once he got to the front of the queue, he was denied entry due to trying to sneak in through the back gate earlier.

‘‘Then the next thing we know, somehow he got up on the roof.’’

Quirk said they were unsure how the man got up there.

Only one staff member had heard the fall as the man had fallen into the back area of The Daily, which was known previously as The Garden Bar.

A police media spokeswoman said the man was taken to Palmerston North Hospital in a critical condition. He was later transferred to Wellington Hospital. A police investigation was underway.

In 2010, a man died after trying to jump from the 8-metre high Downtown building to Whitcoulls. It was believed he was trying to gain entry back into a bar when he fell.

Trooper Ethan Hall, 21, had been out drinking on October 22 and was last seen walking along Main St near Highflyers Bar where he had been drinking.

Coroner Carla na Nagara found Hall was likely trying to re-enter Highflyers by crossing several rooftops, something he had been known to do before.

Highflyers has since shut and was located next door to where The Daily now operates.
