Jukebox group makes new songs old

-

Postmodern Jukebox makes new songs vintage, and the rotating music collective is headed to Palmerston North.

After amassing a huge following with its weekly Youtube offering, the group of performers is bringing its show of re-worked modern music to the Regent on Broadway Theatre.

The band has covered songs by artists ranging from Lady Gaga and The Strokes to Katy Perry and the White Stripes.

Founder Scott Bradlee said they had come a long way since their beginnings as a small group of friends making music in a basement.

‘‘I was broke and living in Queens, New York,’’ he said.

‘‘Seven years later, we’ve amassed 2 million subscribers, we’ve sold out shows across four continents and we’ve become a showcase for an incredible group of performers.

‘‘Every single one of our cast members has unique superpowers and I take pride in putting together the best combination of abilities and personalities to create an amazing experience for our fans.’’

Bradlee said he created the show as a way for an audience to escape from reality.

‘‘We want them to experience what it was like to be at the New Year’s Eve show that [Frank] Sinatra would have hosted in the 1940s.

‘‘We want them to feel the excitement of hearing the greats of Motown live and up close, and a Postmodern Jukebox show is the only place you can experience all of this and more in one night.’’

Multiple Grammy-winning artist Lorde praised Postmodern Jukebox’s vintage take on her hit single Royals, which has been viewed more than 15.3 million times, as her ‘‘favourite’’.

Postmodern Jukebox will perform at Palmerston North’s Regent on Broadway on Saturday, September 3.
