Girls’ High 1st XI make hot start

The Palmerston North Girls’ High school first XI football team were through to the top eight at the national secondary schools championsh­ips in Nelson.

On the first day of the tournament on Monday, they beat Macleans College 4-1, then Sacred Heart Girls’ College (New Plymouth) 3-2.

They then drew with Wellington Girls’ College 1-all on Tuesday morning.

That put them through to the top 16 and they beat Epsom Girls’ Grammar School on Tuesday to qualify for the top eight on Wednesday, where they will play either Takapuna Grammar School or St Kentigern College.

The Boys’ High first XI were unlucky to miss out on the top eight, but will instead play off for ninth to 16th spot.

On Monday, Boys’ High drew 0-all with Wellington College, then lost 5-2 to Mt Roskill College from Auckland.

On Tuesday they beat Tauranga Boys’ College 2-0, which should have been enough to sneak into second place in their pool behind Mt Roskill, but Wellington upset Mt Roskill to go ahead of them.

Boys’ High will play Scots College on Wednesday morning.

The Palmerston North Girls’ High School first XI team had a good start at the national Federation Cup tournament at North Harbour.

Girls’ High smashed Nelson College for Girls 12-0 and beat Tauranga Girls’ College 4-2, but lost to Villa Maria College (Christchur­ch) 5-3.

The Palmerston North Boys’ High School first XI had two wins to to start the Rankin Cup in Wellington.

They beat Rangitoto College 4-3 on Monday, then Pakuranga College 7-0 on Tuesday.

They were to play Tauranga Boys’ College on Tuesday night.

Levin’s Waiopehu College lost their opening game of the tournament 5-1 to Pukekohe High School, but came back to beat St Patrick’s College Silverstre­am 5-1.

Waiopehu then lost Wairarapa College 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon.

Crossover games for boys and girls start on Wednesday.

At the lower-tier Rosemary O’brien Cup tournament in Palmerston North, the Girls’ High second XI drew 1-all with Wairarapa’s Kuranui College, thrashed Hastings’

Girls’ High School 9-0, then beat Onslow College 5-0.

Feilding High School beat Kapiti College 4-1, then thrashed Tauhara College Taupo 10-0.

They were to play St Oran’s College late on Tuesday.

Manukura created a big upset on the first day of the national

championsh­ips in Auckland, knocking over defending champions Otahuhu College 17-12.

But Manukura lost their second game 26-0 against Aorere College.

They play St Paul’s College in their final pool game on Wednesday morning.

Boys’ High finished ninth at the national finals at Nelson on Monday.

Boys’ High’s overall score was 481, while winners Burnside High School from Christchur­ch was on 450.

Manukura made an impressive start to the lower North Island secondary schools championsh­ips in Wanganui.

Manukura beat Rua Mano from Otaki 70-18, then Kapiti College 50-16.

Girls High had a close 34-33 win over St Oran’s College (Lower Hutt), then whipped Otaki College 45-9.

Feilding High School were without a win after losing to Wanganui Collegiate School 27-11 and Iona College (Havelock North) 32-29.

The Boys’ High under-15

team were playing off for ninth to 16th place at the colts tournament at the North Shore.

On Monday they lost to Auckland Grammar School 15-6, then drew 3-all on a muddy pitch with St Bede’s College, and beat Massey High School 19-12 on Tuesday.

They finished second equal in their pool, but missed out on the top eight due to points differenti­al.

They play Wellington College on Wednesday afternoon.

Boys’ High had two wins to start the national tournament, beating Auckland Grammar School 5-1 and Rangitoto College 4-2.

They were to play Hutt Valley High School on Tuesday night and Westlake Boys’ High School on Wednesday.

Girls’ High drew 3-all with Rangitoto College, beat Burnside College 5-1 and lost to Epsom Girls’ Grammar School 4-2.

They were to play Macleans College late on Tuesday and Westlake Girls’ High school on Wednesday morning.
