Ordering app launched
The changing business landscape means people have less time T&G'S executive general manager, New Zealand, Andrew Keaney
Greengrocers and supermarket fruit and vegetable managers can look forward to an extra hour or so of shut-eye with the development of new ordering technology.
Produce company T&G has created an app called Firstpick.co.nz that allows buyers to order from their offices.
A T&G spokeswoman said the technology would be welcomed by people who have to drive to market at 2am, and then get caught up in morning rush hour traffic on their return.
T&G’S executive general manager, New Zealand, Andrew Keaney, said about 30 per cent of its customers still visit the 12 markets scattered around the country, but he expects within two years the majority will order online.
‘‘Our customers have been coming onto our market floors for over 100 years to inspect produce, see what’s in season and talk with our produce specialists but the changing business landscape means people have less time.’’
The app has been trialled in Auckland, Hamilton and Taupo. Firstchoice Half Moon Bay produce manager, Matt Burity said the technology had revolutionised the way he ordered fruit and vegetables.
Once a customer places an order it is sent to their nearest T&G market floor where a product specialist - who focuses on just mushrooms or potatoes for example - fills it.
The spokeswoman said the product specialist becomes the ‘‘eyes on the ground’’ for the buyer.
Firstpick also offers a built-in calendar allowing users to place an order in advance, user history to review past orders, up-to-date pricing and real time invoices, status updates on completed orders via text and email.
