Rain rules Manawatu sporting landscape

- GEORGE HEAGNEY AND SHAUN EADE

Central Districts cricket coach Heinrich Malan summed it up best when he said scuba suits were needed across the sporting landscape at the weekend.

Persistent rain meant interclub bowls, club softball, club cricket, Manawatu’s rep cricket match against Wairarapa and speedway were all cancelled.

CD had to cancel one of their trainings last week before heading to Wellington to play on Monday and New Zealand A’s three-day cricket match against Pakistan in Nelson was completely rained off.

Low-key tour

When the Hurricanes toured the Super Rugby trophy through the region last week there was little fanfare.

It’s been three months since the Hurricanes won Super Rugby, but it wasn’t until last week they toured it around the regions.

There was little advertising around where it was going and barely an entourage. Perhaps it would have been better held during the national provincial championships when Hurricanes players were around.

Golfers in Sydney

Manawatu will have three golfers in action at the Australian Open later this week.

Lachie Mcdonald, Tyler Hodge and Josh Munn will line up at Royal Sydney on Thursday, having had the NSW Open at the weekend as a warm up.

At the NSW Open, Munn and Mcdonald missed the cut after two days, being three-under par and two over respectively.

Hodge was well off the pace, but survived through to the final day to be in a tie for 60th at four-under par.
