Hartley on the podium at world champs

- GEORGE HEAGNEY

Manawatu driver Brendon Hartley and his Porsche team finished their World Endurance Championship campaign on the podium, after the final race of the series at the Six Hours of Bahrain race on Sunday morning (NZ time).

The 27-year-old Kiwi and his teammates – Australian Mark Webber and German Timo Bernhard – went into the final race of the season in their Porsche 919 Hybrid unable to back up their overall title win of last year.

There was some consolation as they finished third in Bahrain to finish fourth Hotel, having shifted from their original clubrooms on Campbell St.

UK tour

The Palmerston North Boys’ High School 1st XV are embarking on another rugby tour to the United Kingdom next year.

At the end of next year the team will spend three weeks in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, playing seven games while they’re away.

Thrilling tries

There are two Manawatu tries in the reckoning for the Sky TV fans’ try of the year award.

Of the 10 options, one is by Selica Winiata for the Black Ferns, when she started and finished off an 80-metre effort against Australia, and the other is scored by Ambrose Curtis for the Manawatu Turbos against Waikato.

Curtis’ try was also a long-range effort – he latched on to a centring kick by Newton Tudreu.

Racketlon’s back

Manawatu will be hosting the New Zealand racketlon open at Massey University during Waitangi weekend in February.

Racketlon is a tournament where players face off in table tennis, badminton, squash and tennis.

They go from the smallest racket to the largest.
