Big Boys Toys wows the crowds

- NICHOLAS MCBRIDE

Big Boys Toys has roared back to the central North Island for a second year and did not disappoint.

The only show outside of Auckland, it brought with it an array of international supercars and freestyle motocross superstars.

FMX superstar Levi Sherwood headlined the event, which opened on Friday at Central Energy Trust Arena, Palmerston North, alongside some of the rarest and most impressive cars in the world.

Show organiser Dean Wilson said it was ‘‘guy heaven’’ – full of vehicles people could not see anywhere else.

Among those on display were KITT from 1980s TV show Knight Rider, the 2017 Aston Martin DB11 supercar, Lamborghini Huracan, as well as a range of muscle cars, custom cars, and motorbikes.

Wilson was hoping the vehicles would pull in more than 10,000 people over the three days and numbers were heading that way on Saturday.

Mathew Atkinson of Levin was in the crowd and impressed with the show. ‘‘It is pretty incredible. There is a great range of different vehicles.’’

Atkinson said it was great to see the level of detail put into each car and to see history on display. ‘‘It starts with the dream machines and comes back to the classics.’’

Greg and Juliet Brodie came from Whanganui to bring their sons Benny, 4, and Conor, 7. ‘‘The boys love cars and motorbikes. They love coming to these sorts of things and seeing all the different types of race vehicles,’’ Greg Brodie said.

The show gave them a chance to see vehicles ‘‘you don’t see on the road everyday’’.

Richard Harris, of Palmerston North, brought his sons Tom, 14, and Sam, 10, along to check out the sights

‘‘There is certainly a huge variety of vehicles and toys. I guess that’s why they call it Big Boys Toys.’’

Harris said the family had thoroughly enjoyed their time.
