Shots fired at Awapuni property

- MIRI SCHROETER

Shots were fired at a Palmerston North property and the offenders quickly left the scene.

The incident happened about 6.50am on Wednesday at an Alexander St address in Awapuni.

A resident at the house said the shooting had nothing to do with his family.

‘‘I don’t know what’s going on,’’ he said.

The man lived there with his wife and two children, and said the incident was at a sleepout on the property that was rented to somebody else.

A next-door neighbour said she was asleep at the time, but her father saw the offenders’ car.

‘‘Dad said the car drove into their driveway and they shot into the sleepout.’’

Her father had come home from working a night shift. He could not be contacted for comment.

The neighbour said the residents were relatively new and she did not know them.

A police spokesman said the occupants left the house and noone was injured.

It was unclear how many shots had been fired and how many occupants had been at the property.

Police say they didn’t notify the nearby kindergarten because the offenders had gone and there was no longer any danger to children.

‘‘Efforts are being made to find the offender or offenders, who may have been in a vehicle,’’ the spokesman said.

An ambulance had been at the scene, but police said it was only as a precautionary measure.
