Breakers player arrested

- BASKETBALL

New Zealand Breakers guard Corey Webster has been arrested and charged with assault.

The arrest came after police were called to reports of a fight at The Takapuna Bar around 12:30am yesterday morning.

Police confirmed a 28-year-old man was arrested and charged with assaulting another man.

The victim was not seriously injured, police said.

The Breakers confirmed the incident in a brief statement. It was Webster’s 28th birthday on Tuesday.

‘‘The club is aware of an incident involving Corey Webster last night and his subsequent arrest on an alleged minor assault charge,’’ the statement read. ’’The club is making further enquiries into what occurred and has no further comment to make at this time.’’

Police said Webster has been bailed and will appear in the North Shore District Court on Monday, December 5. The Breakers next play the Illawarra Hawks tomorrow night in Auckland.

Webster has been a regular standout for the Breakers, attracting the attention of NBA scouts with a pre-season training stint at the New Orleans Pelicans but he missed out on a full-time contract.

In 2011 he failed a drugs test while playing for the Breakers, and was released from the second season of his two-year contract which forced him to sit out the 2011–12 campaign. He therefore missed out on the Breakers’ backto-back champion run that season.

He tested positive to was Kronic, the synthetic cannabis that was sold legally in New Zealand until later being outlawed by the Government.

Webster tested positive for cannabis use while playing in the New Zealand NBL for the Harbour Heat in 2010. He was forgiven by the Breakers and welcomed back to the club on a three-year deal in August 2012.
