Patel sporting best slug in Central Districts

- GEORGE HEAGNEY

Having the best moustache in the Central Districts cricket team didn’t help Manawatu bowler Navin Patel.

CD held a fans’ choice competition to decide who had grown the best moustache over Movember, and the winner would keep it for the opening game of the Twenty20 competition against Canterbury at New Plymouth on Sunday.

Patel wasn’t required for the game, even though his bushy handlebar effort was a magnificent slug, and he lost the competition to Taranaki’s Tom Bruce, who also had a handlebar moustache.

He had been club captain and manager of the senior A side until only two years ago.

One striking difference

Manawatu man Marty O’connor found one distinct difference between rugby players and footballers, following a recent trip to England.

O’connor, father of former Manawatu Turbos hooker Sean O’connor, toured both Wembley Stadium, home of the England football team, and rugby fortress Twickenham, where there was one major difference between the changing rooms.

In the dressing rooms at Wembley there was a giant mirror and hair dryers, which makes it seem like the footballers have a bit more invested in their appearance.

Cup coming to town

Marist rugby players from all over the country will be converging on Palmerston North on March 11 and 12, when the Spillane Cup tournament is in town.

The Spillane Cup is the annual tournament for all Marist clubs across New Zealand, and Palmerston North Old Boysmarist must back themselves to do well on home turf. Palmerston North last won it in 1993 and have won it three times.
