Festive feasts flourish on Christmas Day

Palmerston North people will be breaking bread and crackers at an array of festive feasts on Christmas Day.

Whanganui and Palmerston North Hospitals will be serving about 300 people croissants, roast chicken, lamb, pavlova and steamed plum pudding. About 100 patients at Whanganui Hospital and 200 at Palmerston North Hospital will be treated to festive food.

In the evening, roasted pumpkin soup will be served, followed by a choice of glazed ham with steamed potatoes and salad, a roast turkey and cranberry sauce sandwich and salad, or roast vegetable and feta salad.

The Salvation Army in Palmerston North will again be serving food for its annual community lunch at midday, which follows its Christmas service at 10am.

A community picnic and barbecue will again take place in The Square for its sixth year running.

Organiser Cheri Birch said the day was a relaxed and fun way for community members to spend time together. The barbecue lunch stemmed from church-goers not having a place to go for their Christmas feast.
