One dead, one in hospital after crash near gorge

Police confirmed the crash on State Highway 3, Ashhurst, about 5.45pm on Monday, involved a car and motorcycle.

One person has died and one man remains in a stable condition in hospital after a crash at a bridge near the Manawatu Gorge.

The injured man was taken to Palmerston North Hospital for assessment, along with one other person who had moderate injuries.

Police confirmed the crash on State Highway 3, Ashhurst, about 5.45pm on Monday, involved a car and motorcycle.

The motorcycli­st died at the scene. The injured pair were travelling in the car.

The serious crash unit is investigat­ing and the matter will be referred to the coroner.

Police are in the process of notifying next of kin.

The road reopened on Monday evening.

Just 10 minutes earlier emergency services had been called to a two-car crash at the intersecti­on of Kimbolton Rd and East St in Feilding.

Police initially reported someone had been trapped in the wreckage.

Only one person was injured in the crash, and they were taken to Feilding Medical Centre with minor wounds, St John spokesman Ian Henderson said.

A child and two adults escaped with minor injuries when their car flipped near Whanganui.

A police spokeswoma­n said the occupants were ‘‘up and walking’’ after their car rolled, landing upside-down, about 9.30am on Tuesday.

One lane of State Highway 4, near Kakatahi, 50 kilometres from Whanganui, was blocked for some time, but had since been cleared, she said.

Ambulance and fire services attended the crash.

A St John Ambulance spokeswoma­n said one man had minor injuries, but no-one was taken to hospital.
