Yes, he definitely deserves the nod

- ROBERT VAN ROYEN

Send the big man to New Orleans. Sure, his numbers don’t stack up with the best frontcourt players in the league, but the All Star weekend has always been more of a popularity contest than anything.

You only have to go back a year, when Lakers legend Kobe Bryant was voted in despite being far from his best.

But hey, it was his final year in the league - has his farewell tour ended yet? so people voted.

Obviously with fans only accounting for 50 per cent of the vote this year, Adams, who has established somewhat of a cult following, is up against it.

But it’s not like he’s only got a ton of fans because of his Kiwi accent, cavemanlike appearance and refreshing sense of humour.

The 23-year-old Rotorua-born centre can flat out play.

With Kevin Durant’s highly publicised move from the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Golden State Warriors in the offseason, Adams’ game has gone up another level so far this season.

He’s averaging double digits (12.4 points) per game and, more importantly, 16+ point performances are becoming more common as he closes in on becoming his team’s second leading scorer behind superstar Russell Westbrook.

But it’s also what Adams is doing for Westbrook, who leads the league in points (1216) and triple doubles (17) by a country mile. The point guard is also averaging 10.4 assists, second only to Houston’s James Harden.

None of this is possible without Adams, who gets through a ton of work off the ball, often setting crushing screens with his 2.13m frame so Westbrook can get to work.

The pair have established great chemistry and seeing Adams hammer home an alley-oop pass from Westbrook has become the norm when watching the Thunder.

At least Adams, one of the toughest centres in the league - who else could handle getting repeatedly struck in the groin by Golden State’s Draymond Green? - would make the All Star game worth watching.

Because, let’s be honest, watching the East v West refuse to play defence in a game with about as much intensity as an Australian Super Rugby derby, makes it nothing but a farce.

Adams might at least get under the skin of an opposition player, say something non-cliche or who knows, play some D.
