One-day title hopes over for the Stags

- CRICKET

Wet weather in Wellington on Wednesday may have ended Central Districts’ one-day season.

Going into the game in last place and needing to win their remaining three games, CD’S quest to defend their one-day title looks to be over now after the game against Wellington on Wednesday was called off due to rain.

Rain set in and the match was abandoned after only 30 overs had been bowled, with the Stags looking on track to post a big total.

Opening batsman George Worker was on 80 from 90 balls when the rain arrived, with Tom Bruce also unbeaten alongside him on 3 as CD were well poised on 150-2 from 30 overs.

Had the rain stayed away, a

score of 300 should have been on the cards for the Stags, provided the old ‘double your score at 30 overs’ adage rang true.

The rain ended up being Wellington’s friend, if you look at the one-day ladder.

Starting the day in third place, Wellington moved top of the standings with two points for the abandonment, leaping ahead of Auckland and Northern Districts on the table.

ND lost to Canterbury by two runs at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, which brought Canterbury equal on points with ND and Auckland.

Otago, meanwhile, defeated Auckland at Queen’s Park in Invercargill, allowing Wellington to move top.

Two rounds remain in the oneday competition before finals.

CD host ND at Pukekura Park in New Plymouth on Saturday, then have what should be their final one-day game against Auckland at the same ground.
